The Megalith Movers Prehistoric Engineering
Blog 8th August 2014    Today we began the “Battle of the bulge”, we carefully stripped off the base shutter and it was obvious we had work to do, the bulge was worse than I thought. With no modern power tools at our disposal I soon began to feel like an ancient Egyptian as I sweated in the blazing sun hammering away with a claw hammer at the bulge and chipping off a little concrete with each blow. It was only a matter of minutes before I began to think “there must be an easier way”.    My eyes alighted on a tool used by all the local farmers (a tool which reminded me of a two handed boatbuilders Adze) one of which I had bought earlier to clear the ground for this experiment. I decided to give it a go, and it proved  a great improvement on the claw hammer, with a sharp edge to bite into the concrete and a long handle which could be used two handed I was able to generate much more force with each blow and chip off much more concrete, however the downside was that at nearly 70 years old I was quickly almost exhausted. Someone had found another of these excellent tools and we all began to work in shifts, two men working and the rest recovering, until by the end of our two hour day we had chipped away a considerable percentage of the material to be removed.    However we all knew that as each day passed the concrete would continue to cure and the remaining percentage would be more difficult to remove. Still never mind it was time to relax and enjoy a cold beer and who knows? Someone might know someone with some power tools.       Myself unbolting the base shutter    I make a start at chipping away the excess                                                                                                    concrete using a claw hammer Having switched to the Adze-like tool,                      Brian takes over adding some extra brawn I start to make some real progress Brian checks the progress <<previous blog page next blog page >> To read & post comments click here return to top of this page
